About GunJitsu
What makes GunJitsu different from a regular firearms instructor? ★ NEW
Most firearms instructors teach you how to shoot. GunJitsu coaches the full personal safety system — where, when, why, who, how many times, the tactics, and the legalities. The GunJitsu framework starts long before the trigger: Identify the threat, Avoid it, De-escalate, Deter, and Win only when everything else has failed. A gun is the last line of defense in a system. GunJitsu builds the system.
Is this law enforcement or military training?
No. MAJ (Ret.) Will Rodriguez is a U.S. Army veteran and West Point graduate, not a police officer. His methodology draws on military and nationally recognized civilian instructor credentials — including MAG Deadly Force Instructor and Tom Givens' Advanced Rangemaster Certified Instructor — and is specifically adapted for the law-abiding civilian. The standard is higher than most law enforcement qualification courses. The context is entirely civilian.
What certifications does Will Rodriguez hold? ★ NEW
Will's primary credentials include Massad Ayoob Group (MAG) Deadly Force Instructor — Top Gun Graduate — and Tom Givens' Advanced Rangemaster Certified Instructor. He is currently completing Force Science Institute coursework. Additional credentials include Sage Dynamics Red Dot Sight Handgun Instructor, Modern Samurai Project Red Dot Pistol Instructor, and ALICE Active Shooter Instructor. He is a West Point graduate, Combat Veteran, and has 15,000+ hours of instruction with 10,000+ GJs coached.
Workshops
Do I need any experience or a firearm to attend a workshop?
No. GunJitsu workshops are designed for civilians of any experience level. Most workshops are non-shooting and focus on awareness, criminal psychology, decision-making, and prevention. No firearm is required, used, or discussed in detail unless the workshop specifically addresses it.
Do I need to own a gun to benefit from GunJitsu? ★ NEW
No. The GunJitsu framework begins long before a firearm enters the picture. Workshops covering awareness, predator behavior, home safety, and criminal psychology are fully applicable to anyone — armed or not. If and when you choose to carry, the coaching and range sessions build on that foundation.
Is this for beginners or experienced students?
Both. The material is grounded in fundamentals that benefit beginners, but the depth and source material make it valuable for experienced students too. Most experienced carriers have significant gaps they're unaware of — particularly in the legal, psychological, and post-incident dimensions. That's where GunJitsu operates.
Are the workshops suitable for women, families, and seniors?
Yes. The curriculum is intentionally designed for civilians of all backgrounds — including suburban families, women, and older adults. Denise Rodriguez, co-instructor and Women's Personal Safety and Empowerment specialist, delivers programming specifically designed for women. The approach is calm, practical, and never condescending.
What should I bring to a workshop?
Just yourself, a notebook if you like to take notes, and an open mind. A digital student packet is provided. Specific workshops may have additional requirements — those will be communicated at registration.
Coaching Sessions & Packages
What is the difference between a workshop and a coaching session? ★ NEW
Workshops are group events focused on awareness, psychology, law, and strategy. Coaching sessions are private, one-on-one, range-based skill development sessions tailored to your specific gaps and goals. Both are part of the GunJitsu system. Workshops build the mind. Coaching sessions build the skill.
What is Expert Witness Representation and why does it matter? ★ NEW
Coaching packages exceeding 20 hours include complimentary lifetime Expert Witness Representation. If you are ever involved in a defensive shooting and need an expert witness to testify on your behalf — to speak to your training, your judgment, and your use of force standards — MAJ (Ret.) Will Rodriguez will represent you at no additional charge (travel and per diem excepted). The 20-hour threshold ensures Will has sufficient exposure to assess your competency and coach you to the GunJitsu standard before representing you. No other personal safety instructor in the market offers this.
Do you offer group or corporate training? ★ NEW
Yes. GunJitsu offers group training for churches, businesses, HOAs, families, and organizations of all kinds. Tailored programming covers the full personal safety spectrum — from awareness and threat assessment to active shooter response. Contact Will Rodriguez directly to discuss your organization's needs.
Are payment plans available for coaching packages?
Yes. Installment plans are available for full coaching packages. Installments are computed at the standard hourly rate — package group pricing applies to payment in full only. Contact us to discuss options.
Policies
What is your safety policy? ★ NEW
Non-negotiable. GunJitsu maintains the highest safety standards on and off the range. Every participant is expected to know, understand, and follow the four safety rules at all times. Per the GunJitsu participation waiver: if the instructor believes a participant is or will be unsafe, dangerous, or involved in criminal activity, that participant will be expelled immediately with no refund. GunJitsu is not liable for slander or libel as part of any such removal. If you're new to firearms, let that reassure you rather than intimidate you. It means everyone around you is held to the same standard.
What is the refund policy?
All sales are final. Participants may transfer their enrollment to a future session within 365 days of the original purchase date — no cash refunds are issued. For range-based coaching sessions and shooting workshops, range fees and logistics are committed in advance for a specific class density. Cancellations after those commitments are made cannot be refunded under any circumstances. Contact (706) 221-0729 with questions about rescheduling.
